PEDIATRIC AND ADULT STRABISMUS
DESCRIPTION
Pediatric and Adult Strabismus is more commonly known as “crossed eyes”. It is often in conjunction with amblyopia, and occurs when the muscles around each eye do not turn in the same direction. Should this problem be overly prolonged, the brain will “ignore” the weaker eye and result in vision loss and amblyopia.
SYMPTOMS
Eyes do not point in same direction, eyes appear crossed. In children: squinting one eye in bright light, tilting head to see better
TREATMENT
The simplest solution is to strengthen the weaker eye through use of patches or glasses. If this is unsuccessful, eye muscle surgery may be needed. For children, the younger the treatment is started, the more likely their vision will be improved.
